The main commercial catch by the MAPS TUNA Fleet are:
• Yellow Fin Thunnus albacores,
• Bigeye Thunnus obesus 
• Albacore Thunnus alalunga,
• Swordfish Xiphius gladius 
The
National Fisheries Authority of PNG has indicated that sustainable
catch rate for the PNG Tuna industry is 300,000 metric tonnes annually.
PNG usually has an annual output of 150,000 metric tonnes. These
includes all of the above commercial species caught.
The
catch are landed fresh gilled and gutted. Once the fish is discharged
from the vessels chill tanks (0 deg C) It is sent to the factory
for grading according to the prescribed Japanese Sashimi Grading
Method. After grading the Tuna is packed into ‘Tuna coffins’
and iced with frozen sillicon gel packs to maintain the desired
temperature whilst in transit to the various markets ie Japan, Australia,
USA.
Our
processing facility is situated at Vocopoint in Lae. It is a fully
licensed export facility satisfying all regulations as prescribed
by the National Fisheries Authority of PNG. The facility is HACCP
accredited with two Audit/annum. The facility has been upgraded
and has achieved its EU number 07EPRO26
( for exporting product to the European Union). Furthermore the
company has registered with the US
FDA
(FDA# 11862697374) )enabling the export of our products to the
United States.
Since
MAPS TUNA has Achieved its EU export approval number the factory
is now been renovated to start value adding its catch. These will
include loining, saku and steaking. The product will be Vacum packed
and frozen to – 45 deg C for Export via sea container to the
EU, Middle East, Aisa and the USA. Future value added Products will
be in developing fish sausage & fish balls.
Maps Tuna is working in close consultation with the EU Fishing Program
to develop the value added Component of its products.
